Useful Links

Below are numerous links to websites I either have thought were interesting or downright useful. Some have no use but are still fun to look through.

Local San Diego Businesses I support (And so should you!)

  • Downwind Marine (San Diego Marine Exchange) - Downwind is the sailing part of the San Diego Marine exchange company of stores. They handle everything you could possibly want for your sailboat topside as well as several great bits of cruising gear. The Exchange, located a block away, is your stop for a deeper selection of mechanical systems. I have literally spent hours just wandering the aisles making up wish lists...
  • Seabreeze Books & Charts - This store is awesome. If its a book about living, working, or enjoying the sea, you can probably find it here. They have a massive collection of charts, as well as an entire section devoted to used books. I've picked up several old tomes that have been a treat to read.
  • Dinghy Doctor - For all your Dinghy needs. Since I have a walker bay 8 that I row, I just go in here to window shop and wish for a bigger wallet.
  • Modern Times Brewery - Has nothing to do with sailing and all to do with making great beer. Plus its right across the street from Dinghy Doctor! Just make sure you go to Dinghy Doctor first and then Modern Times and not the other way around!!! Some of my favorite beer in San Diego.

Maintenance & Repair
  • Compass Marine - A series of outstanding articles describing the proper installation of various bits for your sailboat. Go check it out, you will not be disappointed.
  • Kollman Marine - DIY refrigeration for your boat
  • Boatworks Today - A very informative and enjoyable series of Youtube videos of boat repair, specifically beautification.
  • Garrett Wade - Everything you could possibly need for woodworking on your boat.
  • Moyer Marine - Everything Universal Atomic 4... I mean everything.
Cruising & Communities
  • Noonsite - An extremely informative website for cruisers. Maintains nearly up to date information on all major cruising destinations.
  • Sailboatowners.com - A great resource for all things Sailing, their online store has some incredible deals as well.
  • Cruising Outpost - Home of Bob Bitchin' and the former Latitudes and Attitudes magazine. Remember - "Don't just dream your life, live your dream."
  • Cruisers Forum - As with all forums, it takes a little while to gather the wisdom that serious cruisers like to share from the asshats that just like to spout. But its always a fun read, and a great resource.
  • Sailing Anarchy - More forums, and other interesting bits
  • Charlie's Charts
  • Offshore Blue

Cool Marine Products
  • Blue Sky Energy - I purchased their  SB3000i for my soon to be 200W solar setup. Eventually I'd like to get up to 400W which this controller can handle.
  • Luna Sea Lighting - I have converted all of the lighting on my boat to LED thanks to Lunasea. Their products are amazing. I have nothing but praise for them.
  • Nav Light Indicators - A panel specifically designed to monitor all your lights. Pretty cool.
  • ATN - I think this site is pretty well known. Very well designed equipment for the sailor.
  • Sailrite - Makers of the coolest sewing machine I have ever seen. Thats right... I said coolest sewing machine! They also have a series of very informative How-To videos.
  • Froli Sleep Systems - I want this... so bad...
  • CPT Autopilot - IMHO, The best autopilot in the world today. Again... want...
  • Watershed Dry Bags - Their ditch bag is impressive.
  • Myerchin Rigging Knives - I love knives. IMHO, they are the most useful tool you can carry. I don't own a Myerchin... yet.
  • Brownies Marine Group - Diving Hookahs. pretty cool, but I think I'll stick with a tank and reg. Although I definitely can see the benefits of one when using it around the boat.
  • Top Shelf Marine - Fun bits and some useful tools.
  • Sailmaker's Supply - Need to resupply your sailing repair kit? Need to make a new sail? Here is where you go. I haven't found a better place for the DIY sailmaker.
  • Watt & Sea - Hydrogenerators, amazing product design
  • Winchrite - Want to turn that old 2-speed winch into an electric winch? Look no further.
  • Dutchman Flaking System - Interesting take on Lazy Jacks.
  • Genuine Dealz - Has some of the best prices on marine grade wire I have found. Plus free shipping in the USA!
Dinghies
  • Fatty Knees - Just look. Thats all I need to say.
  • Walker Bay - UV stabilized rotomolded dinghy's. I have one (WB8) I bought from West Marine in a scratch and dent sale. Even with some gouges, its still a tank.
  • Porte-Bote - Collapses to the size of a longboard for traveling, pretty neat concept.
  • Portland Pudgy - Unsinkable dinghy, can be outfitted for sailing and as a lifeboat.
  • Caribe - I love these RHIBs (Rigid Hull Inflatable Boat). BIG tubes and well designed. Made in Venezuela, so keep that in mind.
  • Achilles, Zodiac, Avon are other well respected manufacturers of RHIBs.

  1. This design is incredible! You most certainly know how to keep a reader amused. Between your wit and your videos, I was almost moved to start my own blog (well, almost…HaHa!) Excellent job. I really enjoyed what you had to say, and more than that, how you presented it. Too cool!
